When refugee and immigrant teens 11-21 arrive in Seattle and don't speak enough English to attend mainstream schools, they come to our Seattle World School. We are a public school serving all of Seattle, and dedicated to helping students learn English and adjust to life in the U.S. Our scholarship program helps our alumni who make it to graduation from a Seattle public H.S. and need financial assistance to continue their education. Started through sales of cards made from our students' original artwork, we now combine card sales with direct donations to make it possible for more students to receive awards. All of our recipients are very low income, and most are the first in their families to attend college. They have seen war, refugee camps, economic struggles, religious oppression, and gang violence. They are a diverse and motivated group. In 2012 we gave 15 scholarships to students from Eritrea, Mexico, Vietnam, China, Somalia, Qatar, Cambodia, Guatemala, and the Philippines. There are far more applicants than funds available and we are working to increase our award amounts. We would love to share information about our school, our students, and our scholarship program.
